How to Choose a Topic for a Research Article or Conference Paper and Find the Right Journal or Conference

A strong submission begins before writing. You need a feasible research question, a clear contribution, and a journal or conference whose scope matches the work. Use this guide to make those decisions in order.

1. Turn an area into a focused question

“Artificial intelligence in education” is an area, not a research question. “How is university students’ use of generative AI associated with confidence in academic writing?” identifies a population and a relationship to investigate. Specify your setting, timeframe, method and intended contribution. Check whether the data can be obtained within your resources and deadline.

2. Identify a genuine gap

Read recent studies, compare their methods and limitations, and state what your work adds. A new population, context, dataset, comparison or method may matter if it answers a meaningful question. Avoid titles that announce an untested conclusion. Consider ethics approval, participant access and measurement before committing to a design.

3. Match the output to the venue

A full journal article normally develops methods, results, discussion, limitations and references. Conference calls may request only an abstract or an extended paper. Read the rules on prior publication and simultaneous submission before using the same work in both settings. If a conference paper later becomes a journal article, disclose the earlier version and explain the substantial new contribution.

4. Assess a journal beyond its ranking

Compare your abstract with the journal’s aims and scope, article types and recently published papers. Check indexing in the relevant database itself. Review editorial information, peer review, author instructions, open access terms, article processing charges and the official submission route. Quartiles may vary by year and subject category. No adviser can guarantee acceptance or a publication date.

5. Check a conference carefully

Review the organiser, scientific committee, previous events, thematic tracks, abstract and full paper deadlines, presentation language, fees, certificates and proceedings outlet. A claim that a conference is “Scopus indexed” does not establish that every paper will be indexed. Ask for the specific proceedings title and publisher, and verify deadlines on the official event site.

Before you submit

  1. Does the title match the question, method and actual findings?
  2. Does the venue publish work in your exact field?
  3. Are the template, word limit, references, ethics statements and author details complete?
  4. Have you checked indexing, fees, deadlines and duplicate submission rules at official sources?
