In the 2026 edition of the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University Rankings, the country's universities delivered an unprecedented leap forward. A first in history: 9 universities, 6 in the TOP-1000
A total of 9 Azerbaijani higher education institutions were included in the 2026 QS World University Rankings — three times more than the 3 universities listed in 2025. Six of them entered the TOP-1000 for the first time. According to QS's official statement, this makes Azerbaijan one of the two most-improved countries in the world this year, second only to Jordan.
Baku State University sets a historic record
The country's flagship university, Baku State University (BSU), climbed roughly 300 places to reach rank 688, entering the global TOP-700 for the first time in Azerbaijan's history. This is the country's best-ever result in this ranking.

In the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026, 7 Azerbaijani universities were represented across 22 academic programs — a fourfold increase compared to the previous year. This shows that international recognition is growing rapidly across individual fields of science as well.
The only South Caucasus representative in the sustainability ranking
Another notable fact: in the "QS Sustainability 2026" ranking, Azerbaijan is the only South Caucasus country represented — no university from any other country in the region made the list. This confirms that Azerbaijani universities are also advancing on environmental and social sustainability indicators.
